چکیده

Cod-liver oil is the fixed oil expressed from the fresh liver of the codfish (Gadus morrhua, Linn.) by the application of low pressure steam at a temperature not exceeding 85?C., and freed from solid fat by filtration at about 0?C. It occurs as a pale yellow liquid with a slightly fishy but not rancid odour, and a bland, slightlyfishy taste. Amongst fatty oils, cod-liver oil occupies a peculiar position chemically, for it contains, besides the ordinary types of fat, glycerides of very non-saturated fatty acids (largely those of Clupanadonic acid, C22H3402 and of a highly unsaturated acid containing 18

Lxii. the Determination of Vitamin D

THE stability of preparations of vitamin D is of importance, both for the commercial products now on the market, and especially for the standard solutions which are widely used in estimations of the activity of other preparations. At present the International Standard adopted at the London Conference in 1931 consists of a solution of irradiated ergosterol in olive oil, and although this is like...

Prevention of the injurious effects of excessive cod-liver oil by its fortification with vitamin E.

The injurious effects of dietary excess of cod-liver oil, and the role of the oil both as a source and antagonist of vitamin E, have been discussed in previous communications (Moore, Sharman & Ward, 1958a, b, 1959). According to chemical estimation a specimen of medicinal cod-liver oil contained about 10 mg u-tocopherol/Ioo g. This finding implied that if rats were to be given the oil as 10% of...

Local Treatment of Infected Experimental Wounds *Read before the Indian Science Congress Session held at Bangalore in January 1946.

Dann, Gltjcksmann and Tansley (1942) tried cod-liver oil and its various fractions in the treatment of experimental wound in rats. They found that cod-liver oil acts as a mild irritant, which perhaps benefits healing by stimulating the formation of granulation tissue. Sulphonamides have been used very widely both locally and internally for the treatment of infected wounds. The clinical progress...

Immunomodulatory Activity of Cod Liver Oil

The immunomodulatory activity of Cod liver oil (CLO) was evaluated by mice lethality test, carbon clearance assay, neutrophil adhesion test, cyclophosphamide-induced neutropenia, indirect haemagglutination test and effect on serum immunoglobulin levels. CLO was administered orally at a dose of 0.5 g/kg or 1 g/kg body weight. In mice lethality test, low dose of CLO (0.5 g/kg, po) produced 40% de...
